It’s just towards find yourself it starts to break down, nevertheless smack-up finale rescues it about ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it’ll have no higher challenge in the way of life down its very ugly label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The movie motions at the an easy pace, brand new dialogue try slick and you can characterisations fundamentally active. Richard Brody in the Brand new Yorker noted “This terse and you may tight film noir was predicated on the brand new intimate and you can elite group issues of your name character, the new violent mastermind (played by Cock Powell) about a classy illegal local casino. This new film’s writer and manager, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess games, to possess mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) worked on gambling establishment and you will old a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely regulated gestures regarding like and danger, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will stylishly cocky photo (and his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle a hidden classic of the style.” [ 10 ]

Photo keeps motion and you will suspense, and you will certain short matches out-of laughs to add style. Ace shows from the Cock Powell, due to the fact a betting home overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, just like the a police inspector, and additionally up the score . Even though the area follows a familiar development, brand new characterizations try fresh together with performances adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog is terse and relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney touching. Unusual digital camera angles come-along occasionally in order to escalate appeal and you will briefly arrest the eye. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing due to the fact movie director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, totally new writer and affiliate music producer, and additionally aids in rendering it a smooth design.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a matter of watching Mr. Powell go through his paces fashionably whenever you are an enormous shed out of actors and you will performers provide your traditional service. Evelyn Keyes plays the good little lady exactly who brings forth brand new best in your and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and slinky vixen which will get him toward jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy given that villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does another type of able journey as a tired cops inspector whom in the long run closes the situation. A great amount of sipping and you can smoking is completed by the the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
